Rick's Reviews, Bounder H-FrameEdmond Wheelchair Repair & Supply
Fair and honest review of the Bounder H-Frame electric wheelchair.
BOUNDER PLUS H-FRAME, Hi-performance Power Wheelchair Rating Recommended use, Indoor / Outdoor
The Bounder H-Frame power wheelchair from 21st Century Scientific was designed as a high performance chair and hits the mark almost head-on. The H-Frame does have its shortcomings, but you will be moving to fast for anyone to point them out. At around 11 mph the Bounders are the fastest power wheelchairs that we know of.
The Bounder H-frame handles as well as any rear wheel drive powerchair indoors and with a little practice most people will have no trouble using one in all but the smallest homes.
Where the H-frame shines is when you take it outdoors and open it up. On my test rides the chair had everyone impressed and they all had to try it, including the folks that do not use a chair at all. Starting out in high will bring the front end off the ground for a second, even at my size. Then the chair settles down and just flies. All I can say is that the H-frame is a ball to drive. The Bounder H-frame uses group 27 batteries. ( the largest standard battery size ) This gives the H-frame great range. The Bounder line uses a separate type battery charger which is easier for many people to use.
The Bounder Plus H-frame has a weight capacity of up to 500 lbs and the Big Bounder H-frame up to 1000 lbs.
Standard seat widths range from 12" wide up to 48" wide, plus the Recaro seating line is available. There are many other options available for these chairs, way to many to list here.
Medicare and Insurance companies will not usually purchase a Bounder unless you are over 450 lbs or there is some medical reason that no other less expensive chair will fit your needs. You can get one using the ABN form from Medicare, but you have to pay the difference between what Medicare allows and the price of the chair. I have not had a chance to drive a Bounder for some time now, but 21st reports they have fixed the three things I did not like about the H-frame. Now if only they would come up with a simplified model that we could sell over the web.
PROS
Good reliability. Parts are readily available. Meets its design goal for a indoor / outdoor power wheelchair. Good seat selection. Comfortable seating. Off-board charger.
