Wheelchair Footrest Recognition GuideEdmond Wheelchair Repair and Supply
A guide to help you find the right footrest for your wheelchairIt seems like every week we get a call from someone who was given a wheelchair or purchased one at a garage sale, and no footrest came with the wheelchair. Many times trying to figure out what type footrest the wheelchair uses can be a major problem because we can not see the wheelchair and they do not know what to look for. We put together this guide in the hope that it will make buying the correct footrest much less of a problem for you.
Below you will find a series of photos showing the different style footrest attachments. The text below the photo will have additional information. All photos are of the right side while facing the wheelchair. The most common styles will be listed first.
WARNING: some footrest attachments are very similar with only small differences. It is better to double check than to pay a restocking fee. EVEREST & JENNINGS STANDARD Fits many different brands including Tuffcare, Merits, some Hoyer, some Guardian, and many others. There will be 3" to 3-1/4" separation between the pin platforms depending on who made the wheelchair. Notice that the bottom pin platform extends to the inside of the wheelchair frame, this is where the footrest latches.
EVEREST & JENNINGS HEMI Fits many different brands including Tuffcare, some Hoyer, some Guardian, and many others. There will be roughly 2-1/8" separation between the pin platforms. INVACARE HEMI Fits many different brands including Invacare, Evermed, Medline, some Rolls, and many others. There will be roughly 1-3/8" separation between the pin platforms. Notice that the top pin platform extends to the inside of the wheelchair frame, this is where the footrest latches. The pin platform may look like the ones shown here, or like the platforms in the photo above.
CENTER PIVOT Many different brands use a center pivot style footrest, but in most cases they will not interchange. You will need to know the brand of the wheelchair and if possible the serial number. There will usually be a small tag somewhere on the wheelchair frame or crossbraces with this information. SPECIAL NOTE: The footrest latch point ( the silver doohickey ) may be mounted on the side as shown here, or may be mounted on the front of the frame.
PIN LOCK An old style of footrest attachment used by E&J, Smith & Davis ( S&D ), Theradyne, and a few others. There were several pin platform separations used depending on who made the wheelchair. Measure between the pin platforms and look for a small tag on the wheelchair frame for the manufacturers name. SPECIAL NOTE: the footrest latch ( the part on the inside of the frame ) may have a different style handle. You do not need to worry about this.
HOOK ON An old style of footrest attachment used by Invacare, Rolls, Gendron, and a few others. They will interchange. Back to Wheelchair Footrest
